Several hundred expected at first public conversation on criminal justice & reform before Government advisory panel hosted by Manukau Urban Māori Authority
South Auckland is the first of three ‘drop in’ sessions before a Government special advisory group that’s consulting throughout the regions.
Whānau are being encouraged to come to Ngā Whare Waatea Marae, 31 Calthorp Close on Monday 15 October at 12.30pm to share their thoughts on how the justice system can be improved before the Safe and Effective Justice Programme Advisory Group ¬– Te Uepū Hāpai i te Ora.
The group was appointed earlier this year by Minister
Andrew Little with the intention to listen to what the
public want from the justice system.
The hui hosted by Manukau Urban
Māori Authority (MUMA) expects several hundred after
inviting collective impact partners, Hāpai te Hauora, Te
Puea Memorial Marae, Manurewa Marae, justice sector
professionals and whānau.
“This is a very constructive opportunity to share ideas about how the system can improve directly with the Minister’s panel. I encourage anyone who has had first-hand dealings with the justice system to come along and contribute,” says Ms Irirangi Mako, General Manager, MUMA Whānau Services.
Te Uepū chaired by Hon Chester Borrows is seeking answers to the following questions:
1. What would you like the justice system to
look like for your community?
2. What are your top three
ideas for change in the short term?
3. What are your top
three ideas for change in the long term?
4. What are your
top three ideas for addressing the high numbers of Māori in
the system?
5. Given your previous answers, what are the
main obstacles to change?
