Marking another step forward in Parihaka reconciliation

6 December 2018

Te Puni Kōkiri looks forward to supporting the Parihaka Papakāinga Trust to achieving its vision of rebuilding the mana and legacy of Parihaka.

Te Puni Kōkiri will host Parihaka whānau at the signing ceremony of the Parihaka Fund Agreement in Wellington today.

The $9 million Parihaka Fund Agreement was announced as part of He Puanga Haeata – the reconciliation ceremony held at Parihaka in June 2017.

“This resource contributes to recognising the impact of the Crown’s invasion of Parihaka in 1881”, says Te Puni Kōkiri Chief Executive Michelle Hippolite.

“The Crown apology last year and the $9 million is a commitment to invest in the future of Parihaka,” she says.

The Parihaka Papakāinga Trust, in partnership with the community, and with advice from Te Puni Kōkiri and Treasury has produced a development plan to help move Parihaka forward.

The plan has a strong focus on protecting the story of Parihaka, healing untreated trauma, developing community capability and upgrading essential infrastructure like securing a safe water supply.

Mrs Hippolite says while the Funding Agreement requires a Government-wide response, Te Puni Kōkiri looks forward to working alongside the Parihaka Papakāinga Trust.
