ECan staff to strike on Monday 17 December

PSA members at Environment Canterbury (ECan) have voted to take strike action on Monday after unsuccessful bargaining.

The decision to take industrial action at 12pm on Monday comes after protracted negotiations at ECan and fundamental disagreements over the current salary system.

"Information from Ecan shows that 73% of members are paid less than the standard rate for their position, with some being below the lowest rate for their role," says PSA organiser Angela Collier.

"This is unacceptable to members and is made worse by pay levels continuing to slip in real terms.

Some members have experienced slippage of up to 4% over a three year period with stalled wages failing to keep up with the market.

Other concerns include exclusion of recognition of Te Tiriti and ECan obligations to staff.

"ECan have claimed they have a legal opinion about not putting in a clause in the collective agreement recognising Te Tiriti and obligations to staff. We have asked for their legal opinion on this, and they have failed to provide it."
