Marlborough's Magic Mussels Great Boost For Region
The discovery of cancer-killing properties in the green-shell mussels, is an extremely exciting development for Marlborough and it's largest industry.
ACT Kaikoura Candidate Graham Hewett said at present the green-shell mussel industry is worth $117 million to the New Zealand economy and if the mussel's cancer-killing extract, lyprinol, proves successful it will have huge ramifications for not only this area but New Zealand as well.
"The eyes of the world will be on our mussels to see how they perform in clinical trials to determine just how effective lyprinol is in fighting cancer in humans.
"Most of us know of a friend or family member who has suffered from this dreadful sickness. It is vital that this hugely important project isn't delayed by petty bureaucratic procedures.
"There is a responsibility on those who administer the controls on Resource Management Act, whether local or central Government, the Department of Conservation, Port Marlborough and any other controlling authority, to not abuse their powers and to apply a bit of common sense in any application for resource consents.
"Because of the benefit to all New Zealanders of this discovery I also urge those with claims over the seabed in this area to put their own interests aside and support our mussel growers.
"The
potential for this industry is enormous if handled
correctly. We must work together as a nation to make this
happen. It's a golden opportunity that very rarely comes
along. Let's make the most of it," said Graham Hewett.
