Disarm Alatas And Habibe's Security Guards

The Green Party wants the security guards accompanying Indonesian officials at the APEC conference to be disarmed.

"There's no way any Indonesian police or military in New Zealand for APEC should be allowed to carry weapons," said Green Party Foreign Affairs spokesperson Keith Locke.

"They've shown in East Timor how trigger happy and brutal they can be.

"This morning I asked Superintendent Peter Marshall, head of the APEC Task Force if the Indonesian security forces would be armed. He said that information is not public.

"In the light of the brutality being conducted in East Timor, the Indonesian security forces should be refused the right to be armed, and we should be told that this is so," said Mr Locke.
