Nelson’s Cable Bay Lives Up To Its Name

Nelson’s Cable Bay Lives Up To Its Name This Weekend

Cable Bay near Nelson will be living up to its name this weekend – as Telecom’s state-of-the-art Cook Strait Cable comes ashore after being laid under a 200 kilometre stretch of sea.

“Cable Bay will be a hive of activity on Sunday 25 March as Telecom brings the cable ashore.

“We hope locals will come along and watch the cable laying and find out more about the Cook Strait Cable project,” Telecom General Manager Access and Transport Richard Dammery said today.

“The cable has been laid meticulously in the seabed between Hokio Beach near Levin and Cable Bay. The undersea cable laying has gone very smoothly and we are well ahead of schedule.”

Telecom’s Cook Strait cable will deliver New Zealanders better service - in particular more robust and reliable telecommunications.

It will add substantial capacity to New Zealand’s telecommunications infrastructure, and make it more robust against the risk of failure on particular routes.

This will be New Zealand’s only telecommunication route between North and South Island that bypasses Wellington, avoiding earthquakes and other risks.

At 10.30am Sunday 25 March Telecom will be unveiling an updated historical information board on the project, which should be followed by the cable coming ashore – weather and progress permitting.
