Telecom And Community Trust Get Together To Roll Out Broadband

TELECOM AND COMMUNITY TRUST GET TOGETHER TO ROLL OUT BROADBAND

Telecom and the Community Trust of Otago have joined forces to roll out broadband communications in rural areas of Otago.

Chief Executive Theresa Gattung said this is a unique opportunity to explore the deployment of ADSL technology in smaller exchanges on a commercially sustainable basis.

“The Community Trust has taken the initiative towards gathering sufficient demand from users of broadband to make deployment of the technology viable.

“We applaud the Trust’s willingness to be a catalyst for demand in areas of rural Otago. This is a great basis for Telecom to pilot a new means of extending broadband and fast access to the Internet to more New Zealanders.”

Ms Gattung noted that the joint initiative fitted well with Government thinking on an Information Society Initiative.

“The Government is encouraging communities and business to work together to help improve access to services in rural and regional New Zealand.

“Telecom believes there is potential in this approach. That’s why we’ve taken the opportunity to work with the Trust and Otago community to get the rural centres in the area wired.”

Telecom has already deployed its fast Internet service, Jetstream, in exchanges serving almost 60% of residential customers, and over 70% of business and corporate customers.

Ms Gattung said Telecom would work with customers at the local level to ensure they know that the JetStream service is available, and they understand how to make the most of it.
