gen-i wins leading security accreditation

AUCKLAND, Wednesday 31 October, 2001– Internet Security Systems (ISS), producer of the world’s leading enterprise scale intrusion detection and system scanning software, has appointed gen-i limited as an accredited security partner.

gen-i has been awarded the status of Security Solutions Partner, the highest grading issued by ISS. gen-i has the most ISS trained and accredited security consultants in New Zealand.

“ISS is one of the world’s leading enterprise security system providers,” said gen-i technical consulting services manager David Spratt.

The accreditation recognises that gen-i has specialist expertise in the enterprise security field, he said. “We have built up an extremely skilled team of specialists and have developed a security practice that has become central to many of our operations.”

ISS provides systems scanning and intrusion detection tools. “Systems scanning interrogates firewalls, servers and databases to check security integrity. Intrusion detection monitors for unwanted intruders and reacts accordingly.

“If you like, systems scanning sits outside the network and looks in to find security holes, while intrusion detection sits inside and reports attempted breaches as they happen,” Mr Spratt said.
“Too many people restrict their thinking to firewalls and virus protection when planning their systems security. Systems security is actually an architectural issue that includes servers, applications and databases as well as the network,” he said.

“Intrusion detection and regular audits of system security are by far the most effective way of combating Internet intruders. ISS intrusion detection can trigger a call to a pager, or initiate some form of security response such as shutting down part or all of a system.”

Mr Spratt said gen-i has already implemented ISS systems for government and finance company clients and is currently fielding a significant number of calls from IT managers interested in the ISS product.
