TVNZ provides instant results with TelstraClear

MEDIA RELEASE
July 19, 2002
TVNZ provides instant results with TelstraClear’s
IP service

TVNZ’s coverage of the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games will provide television viewers with up to the minute information assisted by a real-time IP service provided by TelstraClear.

TV ONE’s Commonwealth Games coverage begins at 7.30am next Friday (subs: July 26) with the Opening Ceremony broadcast live from Manchester. Highlights packages will run each afternoon with live overnight coverage hosted by ONE SPORT presenters in New Zealand. The use of the IP service will see all of the support functions for games broadcasting – the ‘behind the scenes’ voice and data - transmitted via TelstraClear.

The IP service means that, instead of using expensive international phone lines and a separate network for data, all communications between TVNZ’s Auckland Control Room and the commentary and technical teams at Manchester will run on the one network.

TVNZ Head of Production and Sport Denis Harvey says the service will result in faster, high quality information on hand for ONE SPORT’s Auckland based production team.

“We have a commentary and a technical team based in Manchester feeding information back to our people in Auckland via TelstraClear’s IP service,” he says. “This is the backbone to our administration network and allows improved access and extra speed in an environment where every second counts.”

TelstraClear Chief Executive Rosemary Howard says the use of IP for such a high profile event is further proof of the efficiency and simplicity a single high-speed network can bring to business.

“We’re absolutely thrilled to play a part in helping TVNZ provide faster, smarter coverage of the games. With thousands of kiwis watching keenly as athletes perform on the other side of the world it’s comforting to know the IP technology behind the scenes is helping bring them instant results,” she says.

This is the second time TVNZ and TelstraClear have partnered to provide topline facilities for information transfer, with their first combined effort being the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.
