Navman Launches New Navigation Technology

NAVMAN LAUNCHES NEW NAVIGATION TECHNOLOGY

Street-smart technology from Navman is making its debut in the US, with a new product announced last week at the prestigious international Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

The iCN 630 is a portable in-vehicle navigation product matching innovative street mapping software with the latest GPS technology to create a safe, easy-to-use guidance system for both road warriors and casual drivers.

Navman says their technology, now embedded in the iCN630, will provide a similar level of navigation sophistication in-car to that which made the iPAQ unit a personal mobile navigation success in Europe and the US. .

The unit’s intuitive graphical user interface is powered by Navman’s award-winning navigation software, providing detailed street-level mapping, address-to-address routing, back-on-trackä rerouting when off-course and an extensive points-of-interest library.

Instead of using CD-ROM or DVD like conventional car systems, the iCN630 uses a USB PC connection, and a Secure Digitalä (SD) expansion slot for map storage and has been designed for portability between vehicles.

The iCN 630, based on the low-power, high-performance Intel® PXA250 Applications Processor with Intel® XScale™ technology, also employs the latest in ultra-clear, ultra-bright, color TFT LCD screens and features a reliable integrated, high-precision WAAS GPS receiver.

Large display icons and easy-to-read maps provide an operator-friendly interface for added safety while driving, with the fully automatic software providing voice guidance in addition to visual driving instructions.

“With over 500 million cars worldwide, the demand for a high quality affordable in-car navigation system is enormous,” says Peter Maire, President of Navman NZ Limited. “We have invested over two years of R&D into achieving this goal, and the response at CES was overwhelming.”

The technology driving the unit shares its origins with Navman’s successes in marine electronics, where its products have been developed and tested in some of the world’s toughest conditions.
