New Journalism Award Announced

The Foundation for Research, Science and Technology today announced that it's to sponsor an award for the New Zealand 'Young Agricultural Science Writer of the Year'. The prize will consist of a $1,000 air travel grant that the winner can use to attend an agricultural event or conference of their choosing.

The award will come under the auspices of the New Zealand Guild of Agricultural Journalists and Communicators - the organisation that is responsible for fostering agricultural communications in New Zealand and overseas.

The Chief Executive of the Foundation, Gowan Pickering says agricultural journalists are a key group of people in communicating the developments in science to the primary sector and to the wider population. He says science is moving in some exciting new directions and RS&T is forming a major part of New Zealand's future economic, social and environmental future. Gowan Pickering says the Foundation is delighted to work with the Guild of Agricultural Journalists and Communicators to encourage young journalists to develop a career in writing about agricultural science.

Gowan Pickering says agriculture in its various elements, forms the basis of New Zealand's economic platform. He says it is very important to the country to have information about scientific and research developments in agriculture that captures the exciting strategic shifts in this area that are taking place.

The Award will be open to any working journalist (freelance or employed full time by a media organisation) who is under 30 years of age when entries for the award are called for. Entrants for the award will be asked to state as part of their application, what event that would like to attend if they won the award.
