Standby for Unsettled Weather this Weekend
MetService meteorologists are forecasting unsettled weather over New Zealand this weekend, as a large low-pressure area takes its time crossing the south Tasman Sea.
The longest period of rain is forecast to be on Saturday night and some intense thundery downpours are likely over the North Island on Monday. Strong cold southwest winds may bring some snow to the Southern Alps on Monday night.
MetService Weather Ambassador Bob McDavitt says that the main incoming rain should not arrive until Saturday.
"The weather on Friday evening looks to be mostly dry for anyone planning on an early start to fireworks for Guy Fawkes, but there may be a thunderstorm or two around."
According to McDavitt, the recent solar flare should not have any observable impact on our weather.
"Some people in Levin reported seeing an aurora in the sky last night, but the impact of this flare should fade quickly."
