Future Proofing New Manukau Developments

Manukau City Council is making further steps towards achieving a high speed internet technology network within the city through its latest event ‘Future-proofing new Manukau developments’.

As part of the Smart Manukau initiative, which began in 2001, Council are proposing to introduce changes to the District Plan to incorporate criteria which requires broadband or an alternative high speed internet technology capability in all new ‘green fields’ subdivisions.

“Such a recommendation is vital to our plans for the growth and advancement of Manukau as a smart city”, said Mayor of Manukau Sir Barry Curtis. “It is essential not only for business but also for the rapidly growing residential areas in Manukau, particularly in the regional growth area known as the Howick-Wiri corridor.

“As a Council, our aim for the city is to have every household wired, with choices of high speed internet options as a standard feature of all new housing developments.

“Making our city attractive for business is vital to achieve new levels of investment and jobs for our young people. With our rapidly growing population we need to continue to attract business to enhance economic activity and prosperity for all in the city.

“What could be more attractive at the moment than a ‘wired city’ with a population conversant with the technology?

“We recognise there are a number of options for providing this benefit, wired or wireless. We are, however, focused on the outcome - every business and household in new developed areas having access to the fastest, most efficient and advanced communications technology whatever form that may take.

“In launching our 10 year vision which drove the Smart Manukau project we believe the number of customers involved create a solid potential for a return on investment for the companies who choose to invest.

“In recommending the changes to the District Plan we are committing the city to an exciting future and believe all involved can only win”, Sir Barry said. “This is the basis of the event on the 3rd of December where I am calling for all investors and developers in our city to come together to discuss our intentions”.
