Having Difficulty Writing 64-Bit Code?

Intel Introduces Suite Of Tools, Expertise To Help

Intel Corporation today announced new software tools to help developers design, analyse and optimise applications running on Intel-based platforms supporting Intel® Extended Memory 64 Technology (Intel EM64T). Intel already offers similar products for its Intel Itanium® 2 processor family.

Intel software products with support for Intel EM64T, which allows computing platforms to access larger amounts of memory, include the Intel Compilers, Intel Integrated Performance Primitives, the Intel VTune™ Performance Analysers and the Intel Math Kernel Library. These tools support Windows* and Linux* operating systems, and can be used with Intel Xeon™ and Intel Pentium® 4 processor-based servers and workstations.

The tools can also be used for future Intel-based PCs that support Intel EM64T. Intel plans to introduce this technology in its desktop processor line when commensurate operating system support is available.

“Developers understand that turning 32-bit code into 64-bit code is not easy, regardless of whether an Intel platform or a competitive component is being used,” said Jonathan Khazam, general manager of Intel’s Software Products Division. “Intel offers software developers the expertise and tools for Intel EM64T to make the job easier and application performance remarkably better.”

Intel also included additional new features in version 8.1 of its compilers, providing a significant boost in application performance across a variety of benchmarks. Intel C++ Compiler for Linux, version 8.1, includes the Eclipse* integrated development environment (IDE) and the C Developers Toolkit for use with the Intel 32-bit C++ compiler. Eclipse is one of the leading IDEs on Linux, and offers improved programmer productivity through the integration of commonly used Linux development tools, including the Intel C++ Compiler. Intel also enhanced the Intel Code Coverage Tool and Intel Test Prioritisation Tool to speed application testing. The threading and thread-support capabilities of Intel Compilers were also improved to help developers build multi-threaded applications that take advantage of Hyper-Threading Technology.

The Intel Software Development Products, including Intel Compilers, Intel Integrated Performance Primitives, Intel VTune Performance Analysers and the Intel Math Kernel Library, are a full suite of tools that can help developers easily create the fastest software possible on Intel architecture. Intel’s tools are compatible with the leading development environments available today, and are easy to use with the tools developers are already utilising to tune their software. More information on these products is available at www.intel.com/software/products.

The Intel Compilers, version 8.1, are currently available for the suggested list prices: Intel C++ Compilers 8.1 for Windows: US$399; Intel C++ Compiler 8.1 for Linux: US$399; Intel Visual Fortran Compiler 8.1 for Windows, Professional Edition: US$1,399; Intel Visual Fortran Compiler 8.1 for Windows, Standard Edition: US$499; Intel Visual Fortran Compiler 8.1 for Linux: US$699.

The Intel Integrated Performance Primitives and the Intel Math Kernel Library are currently available for the suggested list prices of US$199 and US$399, respectively. The Intel VTune Performance Analysers with support for Intel EM64T will be available later this year for the suggested list price of US$699.

In addition to its advanced software tools, Intel offers its customers the latest technical expertise in 64-bit capabilities through Intel Solution Services, Intel’s worldwide professional services organisation. Intel Solution Services consultants can work side-by-side with developers to help them better understand and enhance the performance and scalability of their software applications, while taking advantage of the latest features available on Intel platforms.

Intel, the world’s largest chip maker, is also a leading manufacturer of computer, networking and communications products. Additional information about Intel is available at www.intel.com/pressroom.
