MetService Awarded For Wind Shear Alert System

Issued at 12:29pm 03-Nov-2005

METSERVICE AWARDED FOR WIND SHEAR ALERT SYSTEM

At last night's Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport awards dinner, MetService was awarded with the 2004/5 award for Safety Innovation.

This award marks the development and implementation of a wind shear forecasting system for Dunedin Airport.

Planes flying into Dunedin Airport can sometimes be affected by wind shear - changes in the wind speed and direction as the plane comes into land. MetService staff implemented a computer model to forecast the detailed structure of the wind near the airport, and provide alerts when difficult wind shear conditions become likely.

MetService Chief Executive John Lumsden accepted the award commenting that it is a great example of MetService staff finding innovative solutions to customer problems.
