Second Canterbury river found to contain Didymo

DATE 21 February 2006.

Second Canterbury river found to contain Didymo.

Didymo has been found in the Ahuriri River in Canterbury, Biosecurity New Zealand announced today.

A sample taken by the Department of Conservation on Friday was this morning confirmed as being Didymo.

The sample was from a small colony of Didymo interspersed with native algae, rather than large blooms of the invasive algae. The find brings the number of rivers known to be affected to 10.
