Young environmentalists get active
Young people with a passion for the environment are heading to Wellington next week to learn first hand about environmental management at a forum aimed at inspiring action in their own communities.
Thirty-nine students representing 14 regions are attending the 2007 Sir Peter Blake Youth Environment Forum.
Delegates will spend four days working with Ministry for the Environment and Sir Peter Blake Trust staff on practical projects about waste, water and sustainable households. At the end of the forum, delegates will present their project findings at an event in the Grand Hall, Parliament Buildings.
The forum is hosted by the Ministry in partnership with the Sir Peter Blake Trust and regional councils, with support from Environment Minister David Benson-Pope and Youth Affairs and Associate Environment Minister Nanaia Mahuta.
Mr Benson-Pope said the forum was a fantastic opportunity for future environmental leaders to be empowered to take action in their own schools and communities.
“Sir Peter Blake was an inspirational New Zealander who spoke up and took action for our environment. I am looking forward to meeting enthusiastic young environmentalists and hearing about their aspirations for our country”, said Mr Benson-Pope.
The forum will spilt into three groups of 14 to learn about a pressing environmental issue, and be set a project for the week to report back to Ms Mahuta.
