Brace For Another Bout Of Wind And Rain

MetService has issued severe weather warnings for wind and rain covering many central and northern parts as an active cold front coupled to a deepening low pressure area crosses the country on Tuesday.

"People in the North Island and northern parts of the South Island may need to brace themselves for a few days of wind and rain," said MetService Weather Ambassador, Bob McDavitt. "The combination of wind and rain has the potential to cause damage to trees, power lines and insecure roofs or boat moorings, and to make driving conditions very difficult."

"On Tuesday, northwest gales may reach 150 km/hr on the higher hills of Wellington including near the summit of the Rimutaka Road, and around 120 km/hr at times for anywhere from Auckland to Nelson and Marlborough."

The rain with this system is not expected to last long, but should be heavy on Tuesday especially in the zone across Taranaki to the central High Country and about the Tararua, Buller and Nelson ranges and Marlborough Sounds. On Tuesday night, heavy falls are also likely for the Coromandel and Kaimai Ranges, and the eastern ranges of the Bay of Plenty.

On Wednesday, a belt of very squally westerly gales is likely to stretch from Buller and western Nelson across the central North Island to parts of Hawke's Bay.

Mr. McDavitt added that these winds should slacken off in time for the weekend. "That's good news for those planning outdoor pursuits".
