Science Advisor appointment signals commitment to science

The Royal Society of New Zealand joins others in congratulating Professor Peter Gluckman on his appointment today as Chief Scientific Advisor to the Prime Minister.

Professor Gluckman has made a huge contribution over the years in the area of medical research and was instrumental in establishing the Liggins Institute, which continues to undertake world-class biomedical and clinical research.

In 2001, Professor Gluckman was awarded the Rutherford Medal, New Zealand’s premier science award. As a Fellow of the Royal Society, his contribution to furthering science and communicating science to the public has been substantial.

Such an appointment clearly demonstrates the Government’s commitment to science and its importance to our society. Chief Science Advisors in other countries have played an important role in helping raise the profile of science and underlining its importance to a nation’s economy.

“I’m proud that such an eminent fellow of the Society had been appointed to this significant position,” said Royal Society President Neville Jordan of the appointment.

“The Council and staff of the RSNZ look forward to working closely with Professor Gluckman in his new role.”
