Auckland’s aspiring scientists recognised

Hundreds of aspiring young scientists across central Auckland recently displayed science and technology projects at the NIWA Auckland City Science and Technology Fair, with six Auckland school students picking up Auckland Council awards at the event.

Intermediate and secondary schools across Auckland, Waikato, Wellington and Bay of Plenty participated in the NIWA Science & Technology Fairs, which aims to encourage students to consider science for their future careers.

Students from Onehunga High School, Remuera Intermediate and Diocesan School for Girls were awarded Auckland Council silver awards for their projects at a prize-giving on Monday, winning cash prizes of $150 each.

Auckland Council was involved in the Auckland City Fair with two staff members from its Research, Investigations and Monitoring unit, Dr. Fiona Curran-Cournane and Simon Tredgett, on the judging panel.

Grant Barnes, manager of the Research, Investigations and Monitoring unit says: “Auckland Council is proud to be a part of the NIWA Auckland City Science and Technology Fair, which fosters scientific excellence and knowledge among school students. It also supports the Auckland Plan’s aim to accelerate the prospects of children and young people.”

Mr Barnes says the fair helps young people gain knowledge of science and the scientific process, as well as helping them develop critical thinking skills that can be utilised in their daily life.

NIWA’s education coordinator Dr Julie Hall says: “We want to see these young people really excel, and go on to help drive New Zealand’s economy. The future achievements of our young scientists and technologists will lead the way to growing this country’s prosperity.”
