A wet and windy return to school

The return to school coincides with some wet and windy weather.An active front is currently crossing the country and expected to give blustery winds and heavy rain in some places before sliding away to the northeast early Tuesday.

MetService Media and Communications Meteorologist Daniel Corbett commented,"The week will get off to a wet and windy start before there is a brief clearance, followed by a new weather system which is expected to bring further spells of wet and cooler weather as the week progresses."

There are currently Severe Weather Warnings in place for heavy rain or severe gales from the West Coast of the South Island up to Taranaki. The strongest winds look set to be around Cook Strait, with a Warning in place for Wellington and a Watch for the Marlborough Sounds. This zone of active weather will clear in the northeast of the country by early Tuesday.

Slightly drier weather will follow on Tuesday but a brisk westerly wind flow will spread further showers along the West Coast of the South Island.

A new front will slide over the country from Wednesday to Friday, bringing another spell of rain followed by a change to cooler southwesterly winds heading into the weekend. In the cooler air, places in the south of the country may see afternoon highs struggling to get into the low double figures. It could also bring some fresh powder to some of the ski fields.
