1. Post has consulted local NGOs, women's organizations and
relevant GOP ministries regarding request for information on
child marriage (reftel). None view child marriage as a
problem in Peru.
2. The legal age for marriage in Peru is 18. Peruvians
under 18 and over 16 can marry, but only with a judge's
consent. The judge can set aside the prohibition against
marriage of minors if each minor has the consent of one of
her/his parents. If parents are not available to give
consent, grandparents are consulted. Persons under 16 cannot
legally marry.
