1. (SBU) Poloff met with Czech MFA Director of the UN
Department Jan Kara on September 1 to discuss Guatemala's
candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UNSC. Kara
confirmed the Czech Republic strongly supports Guatemala.
Kara met with Guatemalan officials at UNGA in New York the
week of September 18 to reiterate Czech support. Poloff met
September 25 with Deputy Director of the UN Department Josef
Vitek to continue the discussion. Vitek said the Czechs are
willing to contact unspecified allies in Europe and other
regions to urge them to support Guatemala.
