SUBJECT: JOURNALIST "SAFE AT HOME" AFTER NIGHT IN HIDING

REF: DHAKA 06225

1. (SBU) At 2030 hrs on October 11 Salah Uddin Shoaib
Choudhury called POLOFF to provide an update of his
situation. Choudhury told POLOFF that he was now "safe at
home." Choudhury said his lawyer had arranged "anticipatory
bail" for him on an arrest warrant regarding the charges
filed against him by Helaluddin Khan, whom Choudhury had
identified as one of the people who attacked him on October
5.

2. (SBU) POLOFF asked Choudhury to contact us immediately if
there are any developments in the case. POLOFF also informed
Choudhury that an Embassy observer would be monitoring his
sedition court hearing on October 12.

3. (SBU) Choudhury said he was thankful for the Embassy's
efforts in helping him over the past few years, and
particularly for the assistance provided over the past few
days. He also expressed regret over the Wall Street Journal's
characterization of the Embassy's relationship with him. He
asked that POLOFF convey his thanks to the Ambassador and
Charge.

4. (SBU) Embassy will continue to maintain close contact with
Choudhury, and check in with him daily. An Embassy observer
will attend his sedition case hearing on October 12.
