SUBJECT: MONUMENT FOR CUBANA BOMBING VICTIMS PLANNED
1. (U) Cuban Ambassador Merchante Castellanos, Minister of
Foreign Affairs Rudy Insanally, and Mayor of Georgetown
Hamilton Green spoke at a ceremony on Friday afternoon
marking the 30th anniversary of the 1976 Cubana C.U. 455
bombing. Seventy-three people, including eleven Guyanese,
were killed when a bomb planted by terrorists exploded in the
aircraft. A monument honoring the victims is planned for
downtown Georgetown. Local press covered the anniversary,
and noted the persistent pleas of the victims' families for
the perpetrators of the bombing to be brought to justice.
