SUBJECT: PARLIAMENT CONFIRMS GLAVAS DETENTION
REF: ZAGREB 1390 AND PREVIOUS
1. Parliament voted November 22 to confirm a committee
decision to strip MP Branimir Glavas of his immunity from
detention, allowing the court to keep him in detention based
both on the gravity of the alleged crimes and the protection
of witnesses (reftels). Glavas could face up to a year of
investigative detention, after which the court must indict or
release him.
2. The decision was supported by most MPs of the ruling
Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) and by major opposition
parties. As foreshadowed in Post reporting, the vote
reversed a previously announced HDZ caucus position opposing
long-term detention of Glavas.
