SUBJECT: UN'S 2007 CONSOLIDATED APPEAL REACHES USD 453.6
MILLION
1. (SBU) On December 7, UN representatives in Jerusalem
announced the launch of the 2007 consolidated appeal for 12
UN agencies and 14 NGOs. The USD 453.6 million emergency
appeal is designed to help meet the growing humanitarian need
in the Palestinian territories. This amount represents a 15
percent increase from the USD 394 million under the 2006
revised appeal, of which 66 percent was actually raised.
UNSCO Deputy Special Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator
Kevin Kennedy announced that 77 percent of the 453.6 million
requested through the 2007 CAP would assist Palestinians in
the form of jobs, food and cash. He stated that the 2007
appeal is the largest appeal ever for emergency humanitarian
assistance in the Palestinian territories.
2. (SBU) Of the 12 UN agencies requesting funds for 2007,
the following are most notable:
- UNWRA -- USD 245.05 million;
- WFP -- USD 52.08 million;
- UNDP -- USD 50.15 million;
- UNICEF -- USD 25.84 million;
- UN Habitat -- USD 20.42 million; and
- WHO -- USD 6.27 million.
3. (SBU) During its press conference on December 7, the UN
presented a 15-minute documentary entitled "Closed," which
portrayed the cumulative economic and social impct of
movement and access issues in the West Bankand Gaza. In
addition, OCHA representatives spoe about the negative
impact of the current PA fical crisis on the day-to-day
lives of Palestinias.
