SUBJECT: CZECH REPUBLIC REQUESTS SUPPORT FOR ITS CANDIDACY
FOR UNSC SEAT

1. (U) The Czech Republic has formally requested USG support
for its candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security
Council for the period 2008-09.

2. (U) The unofficial translation of the April 17 diplomatic
note is as follows:

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic
presents its compliments to the Embassy of the United States
of America in Prague and has the honour to remind the latter
of the candidature of the Czech Republic for the seat of a
non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the
period 2008-09, at the elections to be held during the 62nd
session of the UN General Assembly in autumn 2007.

The decision of the Czech Republic to seek membership of the
Security Council is motivated by its belief in the unique
role of the UN as an instrument of multilateral action for
peace, human security and development and its will to
contribute more actively to solution of the current security
threats and challenges.

The Government of the Czech Republic would highly appreciate
the valuable support that the Government of the United States
of America would lend to the candidature of the Czech
Republic to a non-permanent seat in the Security Council.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic avails
itself of this opportunity to renew to the Embassy of the
United States of America in Prague the assurances of its
highest consideration."
