Part C - Success Stories

4. DHRF-06-660-01: Justice et Paix (Justice and Peace), Isiro,
Wamba. $14,000
Justice et Paix created a reading, writing and counting textbook in
four local languages and French that taught human rights,
self-reliance, advantageous behaviors, dignity of the individual,
the central position and responsibility of women in the family, and
children's rights.. It calls this approach "Alphabtisation
conscientisante" (Empowerment Literacy). DHRF funds paid for
printing 4,000 copies in Tshiluba and Kikongo. The textbook are
being used throughout the country.
5. DHRF-06-660-06: S.O.S. SIDA. Bukavu,South Kivu. $9,000
S.O.S. SIDA helps victims of sexual violence obtain material,
medical and psychological assistance. This project distributed
hoes, spades, corn seed, and bean seeds to provide 291 women victims
a livelihood in agriculture. It also trained 87 of them in human
rights and leadership to enable them to help other women in turn.
DHRF funds paid for the agricultural tools and seeds, and for
two-day workshops in three locations.
