SUBJECT: TOKYO MEDIA REACTION - Pakistan
LEAD STORIES: Most Tokyo dailies gave top play to a
former senior Defense Ministry official's sworn
testimony in the Upper House on Thursday, during which
he said that two former defense chiefs were among those
wined and dined by an executive of a Japanese defense
equipment firm who is alleged to have embezzled
corporate funds.
"US Miscalculates Situation in Pakistan" The business-
oriented Nikkei's Washington correspondent wrote
(11/16): "The US is increasingly cautious about the
situation in Pakistan, which has deteriorated following
the imposition of a state of emergency. Washington is
concerned about the possible outflow of nuclear weapons
from that country. The Bush administration will send
Deputy Secretary of State Negroponte to Pakistan as
early as Friday out of concern that the three pillars
of US diplomacy toward Pakistan -- democratization,
antiterrorism, and nuclear nonproliferation -- could be
shaken due to Washington's own strategic miscalculation
about the situation there. The US is likely to seek a
'soft-landing' for Pakistan while continuing to extend
support to President Musharraf, who is playing a key
role in the war on terrorism."
