SUBJECT: TOKYO MEDIA REACTION - SUDAN

1. LEAD STORIES: Front-page items on Monday morning
included the ongoing WTO Doha Round trade
liberalization talks.

2. "International Pressure Needed to Stop Genocide" The
liberal Tokyo Shimbun editorialized (7/28): "The
International Criminal Court sought an arrest warrant
for Sudanese President Bashir for the genocide in
Darfur. Although it remains uncertain whether he will
be arrested, the move is significant in terms of
stopping the genocide.... The international community
should not overlook the state crimes being committed in
Darfur but should use this opportunity to apply
concerted pressure on Sudan. However, China has been
hesitant to criticize Bashir due to its economic ties
with Sudan. We would like to call on China, a member of
the UN Security Council, to alter its position on Sudan
ahead of the Olympics."
