1. (SBU) DCM verbally delivered demarche per reftel July 25 to
Ignace Gata, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs as Foreign Minister
Antipas Mbusa Nyamwisi was unavailable. Gata requested a meeting
July 29 with DCM to discuss the Zimbabwe in detail. Poloff attended
as notetaker. Gata advisor Jean Pierre Masala was also present.

2. (SBU) Gata noted the good relations between the DRC and Zimbabwe
and labeled the recent discussions between the ZANU-PF and the MDC
as a positive development. He said the DRC will raise U.S. concerns
as provided in talking points at the next Southern Africa
Development Community (SADC) meeting in South Africa in August.
