SUBJECT: TOKYO MEDIA REACTION - THAILAND

1. LEAD STORIES: All papers gave top play on Friday
morning to the growing likelihood that four candidates
will run in the LDP presidential election on September
22.

2. "Turmoil in Thailand a Loss for All of Asia" The
liberal Asahi editorialized (9/5): "The political
situation in Thailand remains in disarray, with no
breakthrough in sight.... Although the state of
emergency gives the military the authority to restore
public order, there are as yet no signs that it will
use force against the protesters or move against the
government. The military should remain calm, as further
bloodshed must be avoided at any cost. Thailand is one
of the core members of ASEAN. ASEAN is trying to
contribute to the development of Asia by gradually
taking steps toward a regional community and concluding
economic partnership agreements with Japan and other
nations.... We hope that Thailand will use the current
crisis to push its democracy into a new stage."
