SUBJECT: PEACEFUL DEMONSTRATION AT U.S. EMBASSY LIMA

1. Shortly after noon on December 10, 2008, approximately 40
Peruvian nationals gathered peacefully outside of the U.S. Embassy
accusing the United States of falsely arresting and accusing five
Cuban Nationals of crimes they never committed. Each protestor hand
delivered a letter to the U.S. Embassy, which included the names of
the five Cubans as Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labanino, Fernando
Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero, and Rene Gonzalez. The protestors also
accused the United States of unjustly denying U.S. visas to Adriana
Peres O'Connor and Olga Salanueva Arango, the wives of Gerardo
Hernandez Nordelo and Rene Gonzalez Sehwerert. The letter received
by the U.S. Embassy claimed both were going to the United States to
visit their spouses in prison. The demonstration ended
approximately one hour later without incident.
