SUBJECT: EU: U.S. IMO CANDIDACY

REF: STATE 98012

1. (U) On September 28, EconOff spoke with Jacques Michaux
and Philippe Burghelle-Vernet at the European Commission's
Energy and Transport Directorate (DG-TREN) about the U.S.
interest in seeking re-election to the International Maritime
Organization (IMO) Council in Category A and followed up with
Dimitrios Theologitis who covers IMO issues in DG-TREN's
Maritime Transport and Ports Policy Unit. The Commission
holds observer status, so voting is left to EU Member States,
however DG-TREN appreciated the information and notification
that the United States would be seeking support in European
Union capitals.
