(SBU) Poleconoff delivered reftel points on October 23 to
Carlos Costa Neves, Portugal's MFA Director for International
Political Organizations, and on October 26 to Sara Martins,
MFA Deputy Director for International Political
Organizations. Martins underscored that, like the U.S.,
Portugal was "very much against" no-action motions and would
support the three UN human rights resolutions against Iran,
Burma, and the DPRK. She noted that the Burma and DPRK
resolutions were introduced by the European Union and
Portugal was therefore a co-sponsor. Martins said Portugal
would also support Canada's resolution on Iran, noting that
her office had been in close touch with the Canadian
Ambassador to Portugal. "Portugal is doing its part to get
these human rights resolutions adopted," she concluded.
