WINNER OF PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

1. (U) On November 2, NATO Secretary General Rasmussen issued
a statement congratulating Hamid Karzai for being declared
the winner of Afghanistan's presidential election by Afghan
Independent Election Commission. Rasmussen also said that
NATO will continue to work in support of the Afghan
government and the Afghan people to help them build a safer,
more secure future.

Statement by the Secretary General on the Afghan Election
Result

I have taken note of the decision by the Afghan Independent
Election Commission to declare Mr Hamid Karzai the winner of
the Presidential election.

I congratulate President Karzai on this outcome. NATO will
continue to work in support of the Afghan Government and the
Afghan people to help them build a safer, more secure future,
including by encouraging greater progress in improving
governance and fighting corruption.
