SUBJECT: COUNTER-PIRACY: EXCHANGE OF MARITIME COMMAND FOR
OPERATION OCEAN SHIELD

1. (U) On November 9, Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 (SNMG1)
took over responsibility for NATO's counter-piracy mission,
Operation Ocean Shield, from Standing NATO Maritime Group 2
(SNMG2). SMNG1 is commanded by Portuguese Rear Admiral Jose
Domingos Pereira de Cunha.

2. (U) The four ships currently in SNMG1 are:

-- NRP Alvares Cabral (flagship, Portuguese Navy);

-- ITS Libeccio (Italy);

-- USS Donald Cook (United States); and

-- USS Stephen W Groves (United States).

3. (U) A press release with more information on the exchange
of maritime command for Operation Ocean Shield can be found
at the Allied Maritime Component Command Headquarters
