SUBJECT: Niger: Pro-Tandja Rally Musters 3000

Ref: Niamey 977

1. On December 15, the Patriotic Movement for the Defense of the
Nation and People, supporters of President Tandja's continuation in
office, organized a rally in downtown Niamey to show support for
President Tandja and the National Assembly.

2. The roughly 3000 supporters consisted of students, government
workers, and members of the Cabinet. The organizers received a
permit, as was the case for the opposition rally on December 13.
The event proceeded without violence or arrests.
