SUBJECT: MAURITIUS SEEKS AU AND SMALL ISLAND STATE CONSENSUS ON THE
COPENHAGEN ACCORD.
REF STATE 132267, PORT LOUIS 0018
ESTH Officer contacted Ms. Faranaz Furzun, Second Secretary for
Multilateral Affairs, MFA on February 2 to confirm whether Mauritius
had acceded to the Copenhagen Accord on Climate Change on January
31. As expected, Furzun reported that Mauritius is coordinating its
position with the informal 42 nation Alliance of Small Island States
(AOSIS) and the African Union. Furzun said African leaders, who are
concluding their AU Summit in Addis Ababa today, would review the
Copenhagen accord. Furzun also said the AOSIS chairman (Grenada)
had informed the Government of Denmark and the Executive Secretary
of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) that AOSIS
needed more time to consider the Copenhagen accord.
