1) Australia’s police face hard battle for Timor recognition. 18/04/00 (Canberra Times) CANBERRA – Prime Minister John Howard has been unstinting in his praise of our East Timor veterans. It is appropriate recognition for the magnificent contribution they made towards returning peace to the island where people had dared, despite all the intimidation and warnings of violence, to vote for independence.

2) Australia's 20 dollar spy 'misguided', says Cosgrove 19/04/00 (AFP) SYDNEY - An Australian soldier facing expulsion from East Timor for trying to be a "spymaster" was well-intentioned but misguided, former Interfet commander Major General Peter Cosgrove said Tuesday.

3) Kopassus told to win back public support 19/04/00 (Jakarta Post) JAKARTA - The Army's Special Force (Kopassus) must be more open to criticism if it wants to regain the public esteem and support it once enjoyed, Army Chief of Staff Gen. Tyasno Sudarto said on Monday.

5) UNTAET Daily Briefing 18 April 2000 19/04/00 (UNTAET) DILI - A workshop of the National Consultative Council took place today and reviewed the calendar of the preparation of the budget for the fiscal year of 2000/2001 for the reconstruction and administration of East Timor in view of the donors conference of Lisbon, Portugal, on 21-23 of June.

6) Timor Activity Update: 18 Apr 2000 19/04/00 (IOM) DILI - There is a continuing need to return displaced people in West Timor to their communities of origin in East Timor, in order for rehabilitation, reconstruction and development to begin. The safe and orderly return transportation of displaced people is the responsibility of IOM by in close co-operation with UNHCR.
