1) UN legal code in East Timor abysmal: lawyers 07/06/00 (Sydney Morning Herald) DILI - A draft UN legal code designed to serve East Timor's fledgling judiciary was so flawed it would make a criminal conviction virtually impossible, a visiting team of senior Australian legal experts said.

2) Refugee deadline looms amid West Timor concerns 07/06/00 (CNN) KUPANG, Indonesia - About 250,000 people were forced from their homes in East Timor last year after militias supporting Indonesia reacted violently to the vote for independence on August 30. Nine months later, about 100,000 of those who fled remain in West Timor -- living in more than 200 squalid, disease-ridden camps scattered across the countryside.

Three cases of clinically suspected meningitis from Ainaro district (no fatalities). An increased incidence of acute jaundice syndrome again in the Dili district.

6) UNICEF Timor Update 07/06/00 (US Fund for UNICE) UNICEF has recruited and trained 11 doctors and 24 nurses for health posts in the border districts of Belu and Timor Tengah Utara. UNICEF has provided medical supplies including infant-delivery kits, essential drugs (such as antibiotics for pneumonia), examination beds, and tents that are being used as temporary health posts until permanent buildings are rebuilt.
