In celebration of Ralph Nader's Presidential candidacy, the Green Party invites you to join us to read the Bill of Rights from the steps of Federal Hall and announce the Green agenda for elections 2000.

We will then walk by the New York Stock Exchange, where the shares of corporations that feed off billions in government welfare are traded, the Family Court, where children and families wait for years without adequate legal assistance for their cases to be heard, the African Burial grounds where the dead were buried in unmarked graves and relegated to historical oblivion. Ray Dowd will announce his candidacy at Thomas Paine Park. We will conclude at the Tombs, the holding pen where prisoners are held for days without being arraigned - and where every day their rights to a speedy trial and effective assistance of counsel are violated.

The Bill of Rights consists of the amendments to the Constitution guaranteeing the freedoms Americans consider to be their birth rights: Privacy, Freedom of Speech, of Religion, Freedom from Search and Seizure, Trial by Jury, from Excessive Fines and from Cruel and Unusual Punishments, for the Right to Assistance of Counsel and Speedy Trials. At the time these amendments were signed, they were part of a radical experiment in democracy that was immediately assaulted. American history is a series of epic battles to obtain the Freedoms guaranteed by the Bill of Rights. American courts and streets and institutions are the battlegrounds where those fights are waged.

The Bill of Rights was signed on December 15, 1791 at Federal Hall, located in Lower Manhattan. At the time, New York was the first capital of the United States - the first government functioning under America's Constitution.

GREENS WALK Leave Federal Hall at Noon Greens walk from Federal Hall and the Stock Exchange to the Federal Reserve, City Hall, the African Burial Ground, Thomas Paine Park, Family Court, the NYC Department of Health, to the New York courthouses and the Tombs.
