1) Gusmao soon to begin weaving East Timor democracy. 06/05/00 (Reuters) WELLINGTON - East Timor 's independence leader Xanana Gusmao said on Wednesday a new state structure was emerging in his ravaged territory, while reconciliation and contrition would be the basis for peace in the former Portuguese colony.

2) Indonesia to Back Xanana for East Timorese Presidency 06/07/00 (Xinhua News Agency) JAKARTA - Indonesian Foreign Minister Alwi Shihab said here Tuesday that his country will back leader of the East Timorese pro-independence group, Xanana Gusmao, as the candidate for the president of East Timor in the general election next year.

3) 80 Rights organizations seek U.N. tribunal for Indonesia 06/07/00 (Reuters) LONDON - An international group of human rights campaigners called on U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Wednesday to set up a tribunal to try Indonesian soldiers who terrorised civilians in East Timor.

4) Filipino peacekeepers in Timor commended 06/07/00 (Philippine Star) DILI - Lt. Gen. Jaime de los Santos, commander of the United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET), commended Filipino soldiers yesterday for their world-class performance as peacekeepers.
