USP Annual Journalism Programme Awards

SUVA: New Zealand High Commissioner Tia Barrett will today speak and present prizes at the annual Journalism Programme Awards at the University of the South Pacific.

Several new journalism video productions by the students will also be shown, including topics such as communication between Fiji's medical profession and the public; dengue fever; and the coup crisis.

"Many of our students excelled in this crisis year and this is a golden opportunity to see some of their work in extremely difficult circumstances," journalism coordinator David Robie said.

Robie paid tribute to the commitment and dedication shown by many of the student journalists during the year and said that many had a fine contribution to make to the region's news media.

He also praised the sponsors who had made the awards possible.

Award sponsors include The Review/FijiLive.com, Daily Post, Caines Jannif Ltd, Pacific Islands Broadcasting Association (PIBA) and Fiji Television Ltd.

Award categories include: * Newsroom Tanoa and The Review/FijiLive.com Prize ($500) - Journalism Student of the Year. * Storyboard Award and Daily Post Prize ($350) - Best Pacific Regional Student. * Caines Jannif Prize for Best Editor ($250) - Best Student Editor or News Director * Caines Jannif Prize for Best Indepth Story ($250) - Best Indepth or Investigative Story. * Pacific Islands News Association (PIBA) Prize ($250) - Best Radio Journalism Student. * Fiji Television Ltd Prize ($250) - Best Television Journalism Student.

This year’s awards are at the New Lecture Theatre (092) 003, 2pm-4pm, followed by refreshments.
