UK DEFENCE PROCUREMENT MINISTER VISIT STRENGTHENS UK-AUSTRALIA DEFENCE INDUSTRY TIES

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Defence, The Hon. Dr Brendan Nelson MP, will today host a dinner welcoming the visit of The Rt Hon Baroness Symons of Vernham Dean, UK Minister of State for Defence Procurement.

The Baroness is in Australia leading a UK defence and industry mission to the Australian International Airshow at Avalon in Victoria and meeting Australian defence industry leaders.

Dr Nelson will host a dinner in honour of Baroness Symons. Senior Defence officials and industry leaders will also attend the dinner, to be held in Melbourne.

The visit of Baroness Symons highlights the strong defence relationship between Australia and the United Kingdom, particularly in the area of Government to Government materiel cooperation and industry partnerships, Dr Nelson said.

Baroness Symons will also visit Australian defence companies, particularly in Tasmania and South Australia, providing an opportunity for Australian industry to demonstrate their ability to produce high technology, leading edge defence products.

The Baronesss visit to Australia provides an opportunity to showcase Australian companies with UK export potential", Dr Nelson said.
