EARLIER STATEMENT

The resistance in Turkey against the imperialist and fascist policy of the state continues. This resistance is aimed against the isolation jails, the IMF and oppression.

"We will rather die than to accept isolation detention", the political prisoners declared and started their hungerstrike, 318 days ago. Their relatives and families also supported their justified demands for en dignified life. Despite the blockades of the Houses of Resistance, and despite the massacre of December 19, where 28 prisoners were brutally murdered, and despite forced feeding in the hospitals, the torture and the arrests, the Turkish government is incapable of breaking this resistance.

Hülya Simsek, TAYAD-member and editor of the magazine ?Bulletin of the Families of the Convicted?, is now the last in a series of 63 people who lost their lives in this struggle.

On August 31, 2001, Hülya died on the 286th day of her action. Hundreds of people gathered in the evening to say goodbye. Also TAYAD-families travelled to Elazig for her funeral. Already at the entrance of the graveyard, they were beaten up by soldiers. However, the families broke through the barricades and reached the grave. At the gravesite as well, the soldiers tried to prevent the TAYAD-families from saying goodbye.

Fifteen people were arrested at the end of the funeral ceremony, among them many TAYAD-members, a reporter from the magazine Vatan, and the secretary of the HADEP-party in Elazig. Inquiries by IHD-lawyers revealed that these people are being accused of shouting appeals. There was no information about the condition of the detained.

More arrests and attacks in Istanbul-Kücükarmutlu as well.

At the commemoration ceremony for the former TAYAD-chairperson Sevgi Erdogan, 19 people were arrested. Many people came, from all the neighbourhoods of Istanbul, but the police tried to prevent them from taking place at the ceremony. The people than blocked the police barricade and carried out a sit-down action, whereupon the arrests took place. We protest the attacks by the police and the military and demand the immediate release of all the detainees! The struggle will continue, and nothing will stop us!

Note: TAYAD is the organisation of relatives of political prisoners
