ACTION ALERT

AMERICAN MUSLIMS ALARMED BY INDIA-PAKISTAN TENSIONS, CALL FOR DIPLOMACY

(Washington, DC - 12/28/2001) - In light of the massive build-up of troops, missiles, and fighter aircrafts along the 1,100-mile Pakistan-India borders, and given the escalating war of words between the two countries, American Muslims urge President Bush to bring the two nuclear countries together in an effort to end the perilous standoff.

Recently, five assailants stormed India's national parliament complex, killing seven people before they were killed themselves. India believes the attackers were Kashmiri-based and accuses Pakistan of harboring groups linked to the assailants.

In response, Pakistan arrested members of groups suspected of involvement in the India attack and froze their assets. President Bush said Pakistan is "responding forcefully" and hoped that "India takes note of that." India described the measures as inadequate, then embarked on the largest troop buildup since its 1971 war with Pakistan.

Both countries have fought three wars since their independence from Britain in 1947. Two of those wars were fought over the disputed region of Kashmir.

Even as the two South Asian nuclear powers emphasize the defensive nature of their nuclear capabilities, military experts point to the increased likelihood of false nuclear alarms, and the potential for dire consequences, as tensions rise.
