We, The World Launches Interdependence Day

August 29, 2002 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

We, The World Launches Interdependence Day At Johannesburg World Summit

We, The World, a non-profit organization that globally links peace and environmental groups, announces the world's first Interdependence Day September 1, 2002.

Interdependence Day is being launched in conjunction with the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, South Africa. September 1st will begin an annual international tradition of global celebration, information and action. The spirit of awareness and involvement represented by civil society organizations at the Summit will continue each year on this day.

Interdependence Day will be the first special day of the proposed "Culture of Peace Month" which includes September 11th and the International Day of Peace designated by the UN for September 21st.

The Interdependence Day Opening Ceremony will take place September 1, 2002 from 3:00PM to 5:00PM at the Sacred Site in Ubuntu Village Johannesburg, South Africa. It will be led by Inuit Elder Angaangaq Lyberth a.k.a. "Uncle" (an Advisory Board Member of We, The World) and Diane Williams (Vice Chair of We, The World). It will be an interactive celebration of the heart and spirit of all the peoples of the world and their interconnectedness with the rest of nature. There will be joyous music and personal testimony to the interdependence of our global community and the responsibility that goes with it.

The organizers' vision: "In proclaiming Interdependence Day, we acknowledge the evident: that all life is connected. When one thread in the web of life is sundered, all are diminished. This tightly woven web of life inherently includes all that is organic and inorganic in a stunning dance of mutuality and support. Where equity and mutual respect prevail, all benefit."
