Report On The UK's Response To September 11

UK: Forthcoming Report On The UK's Response To The 11 September 2001 Attacks

3 September 2002

Serious human rights violations have taken place as a result of the UK authorities' response to the 11 September attacks in the USA. Amnesty International will release a report documenting these violations on Thursday 5 September.

Amongst other issues, the report looks at:

the detention of non-UK nationals, without charge or trial, for unspecified and potentially unlimited duration under the Anti-terrorism, Crime and Security Act 2001; their conditions of detention amounting to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment in high security prisons in the UK; the UK authorities' role in relation to UK nationals currently in detention at the US naval base in Guantanamo Bay.

Amnesty International representatives visited a number of individuals detained in Belmarsh Prison. In addition, representatives of the organization have monitored judicial proceedings, including in connection with people sought by the USA in relation to their alleged links with "international terrorism".
